We have just about waved goodbye to the bad winter weather and can look forward to several months of warm days and nights when the need for heating is minimized. Perhaps you’re breathing a sigh of relief if you didn’t end up with an enormous furnace repair bill this winter, but have you thought ahead as to what you’ll do next year? It could be time to think about installing a new furnace and spring is a great time to begin planning ahead and investigating all your options. It doesn’t pay to leave it until the weather turns again in the fall when you could be faced with having no heating, or being forced into making a decision too quickly. By investigating your options now you can make a considered choice, and you’ll also be able to get it installed when you want it rather than trying to arrange an emergency appointment.

Deciding Whether or Not Your Furnace Is beyond Repair

Before you begin considering your options it could be well worth finding out whether or not your furnace is repairable and whether it’s worth spending more money on bringing it up to current standards. Consulting a reputable installation firm is essential as they should be able to give you an honest opinion. If your furnace is older, then it could be that you’ll find difficulty getting parts for it in the future, and it may actually be wearing out. Furnaces tend to need replacing after every 10 years or so although you may be able to prolong its life through regular maintenance. However you don’t want to spend money trying to maintain an old furnace when you’d be better off spending the money on a new, high efficiency boiler or furnace. If you do decide to go ahead then take sufficient time to make your decision.

Get Advice on Which Furnace Is Best for You

Your installer should be able to advise you on the best brands as well as which would be most suitable for your type of home. They will have the knowledge as to which system will be best suited for your home. Once you are given the options, you should always consider your budget, but also consider choosing a heating system that will be energy efficient as well. Another item to consider, or at least be aware of, is what kind of maintenance that particular system will need. Every heating and cooling system has very basic maintenance that you can do at home. Since each system is different, it’s best to ask and find out.

Additional Things to Take into Account

You also want to check with your installer as to whether or not your ductwork is clean, or whether you need duct cleaning before the installation of your new furnace. Your ductwork doesn’t need cleaning very often, but it’s pointless installing a bright shiny new furnace if your ductwork is clogged up with dust and grime as you’ll simply be throwing your dollars down the drain. It is also worth checking the warranty on your new furnace. There may be two different kinds of warranties which will include the manufacturer warranty and your contractor’s warranty.
