Preventing Air Pollution in your Home

A lack of proper air exchange can cause the air in your home to be up to five times more polluted than outside air. This can cause increased problems in those with asthma or allergies, and can result other serious health risks. Common sources of home indoor air pollution include:

  • Dust, pet dander, and pollen
  • Excess moisture from bathing and cooking
  • Smoke and fumes from fireplaces, candles, tobacco, and gas appliances
  • Harmful organic compounds released by some cleaners, adhesives, paints, and other products
  • Radon gas that can be emitted naturally by the ground in certain areas

Whole-House Ventilation Systems

One of the biggest trends in creating healthy indoor air is whole-house ventilation. There are two types of whole-house ventilation systems.

Heat Recovery Ventilators: HRV systems remove heat from the inside air before it’s exhausted to the outside, and use it to warm the incoming air.

Energy Recovery Ventilators: ERV systems manage both heat loss and the humidity in the air. An ERV system transfers some of the moisture in the humid air stream to the dryer air stream to recover the energy trapped in the moisture.

The bathroom is the biggest source of moisture in the home. The best line of defense against moisture in the bathroom is a quality vent fan. Install one in each bathroom; and use them during and for 15-20 minutes after bathing to remove excess moisture that can cause mold and mildew.

Also remember to change the air filter every one to three months. Install a high-quality air filter on your central heating/cooling system and replace it every one to three months to keep the system operating efficiently. Replace the air filter on your vacuum cleaner with a HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filter, which captures much finer particles than standard vacuum cleaner filters. Another option is to install a central vacuum system that exhausts the air outside your home. Use only cleaners, paints, adhesives, and building materials that are low in VOCs or contain no VOCs. Make sure new cabinets, furniture, and building materials such as plywood, particle board, and oriented strand board used in your home are not made with adhesives that contain formaldehyde. Some houseplants have been shown to actually absorb harmful VOCs from the air. Plants that provided the most benefit include philodendron, peace lily, snake plant, dracaena, and bamboo palm. If you ever notice an issue with the air in your home, make sure to contact us and we can inspect it for you.

Why the Filter is Important for your Air Conditioner

During the inspection of the air conditioning system, all parts should be checked to ensure it is working efficiently. The inspection should include examining the outdoor cabinet, refrigerant lines, the indoor unit, and ductwork.
Examine the compressor/condenser unit. Note the presence of an electrical disconnect, clearances around the unit, the condition of the cabinet and fan blade, whether the cabinet is level, whether the refrigerant lines are kinked or damaged, and the insulation on the lines.

Go outside once more to check the outdoor unit. Check fan operation and feel for warm air blowing out of the unit. Also, feel the refrigerant lines for an indication of any problems. The larger line should feel cold and be insulated and the smaller line warm.

Allow the cooling system to continue operating while you listen to the indoor evaporator unit. Check the temperature of air before and after the coil for appropriate differential (14-22 degrees).  Note any excessive vibrations, fan motor problems, condensate leaking, or any other issues.

Finally, turn of the system by turning the thermostat back up to either whatever the seller had it set at, or if it was off, turn it back off. Then inspect the indoor unit more closely, checking the condition of the air handler for rusting and corrosion, the presence and condition of the air filter, and the condition of the condensate tray and lines.

If you notice anything out of the norm with your air conditioner, make sure to contact us. We can inspect the system to ensure it is working properly and efficiently for you this summer.

Improving the Air in your Home

When you are indoors, you will want the air to be the best quality possible. Air that has been filtered in some way has been proven to be healthier for people who breathe it. A variety of respiratory illness symptoms have been directly linked to the quality of air breathed by the victim. An air filter is specifically designed to filter incoming air and trap many harmful known airborne substances. An individual who suffers from asthma, hay fever, and allergies find that using a special filter helps to relieve some of their breathing problems. There are numerous harmful particles that float around aimlessly in air, a filter added to an air handling system helps to trap these particles and prevents them from being breathed in. Adding an air purification device to boost the benefits of an air filter helps keep most of the air safe to breathe.

Many people have discovered that using air cleaners in addition to specialty filters in their air handlers provides an even higher quality of air. There are two types of air cleaners on the market today; one is known as an electrostatic precipitator and the other an ionizer. Both of these air cleaning devices make a great addition to the use of a HEPA filter in an air unit and have been known to provide tremendous results.

An electrostatic type of cleaner pulls air into its system and charges particles with either a negative or positive charge. The air is then passed through to a set of plates that hold an opposite charge and trap the particles by attracting them to the plates where they get stuck. An ionizing air cleaner basically does the same type of charging process, however charged particles are released into the air with the electronic charge and they become attracted to surfaces and stick to them. Generally the charged particles will fall to the floor or become attached to fabric surfaces such as curtains. Both types of cleaners have been proven to be extremely efficient at providing cleaner air for breathing.

People who suffer from breathing conditions such as COPD, emphysema, asthma, and other breathing conditions benefit the greatest from air purifying devices. These devices are designed to trap the very particles that irritate breathing conditions. Many people who have tried an air cleaning device experience far less breathing symptoms and find that their overall health can improve as a result. It is important to keep an air purifier clean for maximum results. In addition to keeping air purifying devices clean it is equally important to vacuum and dust on a regular basis as well. People with breathing problems that use air cleaners to clean the air in their home have a wide array of brands to choose from. If you are not sure which one is right for you, make sure to contact us.

Why a Dehumidifier is Beneficial for your Home

When you spend time in your home, you will want it to pleasant and comfortable. This is why investing in a dehumidifier can be beneficial. If your home is humid and uncomfortable, you may benefit from having a dehumidifier. There are also several benefits that the dehumidifier can offer.

Dehumidifiers take away excess humidity in your home, leaving you with drier air. This helps to reduce damp and the associated problems like mold growth and peeling wallpaper. Molds need moisture to grow. When the central heating is cranked up and ventilation is compromised by keeping windows closed, molds thrive. Dehumidifiers take away the essential humidity that mold needs in which to grow.

Dust mites are extremely common and are again a little-understood allergy trigger for many people. Even the cleanest homes harbor dust mites, which tend to lurk in mattresses, upholstery, and carpets. These tiny creatures are microscopic and can cause allergy symptoms in certain people.

Dehumidifiers also can reduce condensation. Cooking, showers, and baths can all cause condensation, which in turn can contribute to damp and mold growth. A dehumidifier can help to reduce the effects of this in other rooms of the house.

Another issue with humidity is the damage it can do to your home and furniture. Excess moisture can cause furniture and upholstery to contain mildew. They can develop that characteristic musty smell and feel slightly damp to the touch. A dehumidifier can help to prevent this. If you are not sure what type of dehumidifier to invest in, make sure to contact us and we can advise you on the right one for your home.

Investing in an Air Purifier

An air is an appliance that aids in the removal of pollutants from air. They are very helpful devices for people who suffer from asthma or allergies. Air purifiers help in getting rid off second hand smoke, hence it is very useful if you have a smoker at home. Air purifiers also serve residential as well as commercial needs. Commercially air purifiers serve various industrial, medical and commercial industries.

They have HEPA, high efficiency particulate air, filters that aid in cleaning the air around that is circulated. They help get rid off contaminants and impurities from the air. It is possible for the HEPA filter to remove about 99.9% of dust particles bigger than 0.3 microns. HEPA filters can clear the air of dust, pollen, pet dander, smoke, and almost all pollutants that are in the air.

Having an iconic purifier can help with those who have health issues as they help in cleaning the tiniest particles in the air. They can also help preserve room decor, protect furnishings, reducing maintenance and housekeeping. With an air purifier, you can breathe easier while you are in your home. If you are not sure what type of air purifier to purchase, make sure to contact us and we can recommend the right one for you and your home.

Doing so will help you to know whether you are dealing with a serious problem that will require immediate radon mitigation. Protecting your home in this manner helps to reduce the amount of illness you may encounter in your home.

Why Checking For Radon Is Important

A home should be a safe place where residents are protected from the harsh elements that occur in outdoor weather and temperatures. However, sometimes a home can be a dangerous place because of unseen and undetectable intruders that can cause serious health effects. Radon gas is one of these intruders that have gained notoriety in recent years. This is because it cannot be seen and is odorless. High concentrations of radon gas are sometimes found in homes and serious health complications are often attributed to these high levels of radon gas within the home. If your home is filled with radon gas, you need to be aware of the procedures required to clean up your in-home environment.

What Radon Is

Radon is a gas that is not detectable either by sight or smell. It is a radioactive gas that is found all over the earth’s atmosphere. Radon gas levels can be very dangerous if they are not dealt with and dispersed into the outer atmosphere. Outside, radon gas levels are so small that they do not pose any threat to humans. However, in indoor conditions, radon gas levels can get too high and too concentrated. These high levels of gas can cause severe side effects such as radiation poisoning or even death. Installing a radon detector in your home is a great way to prevent such harmful side effects from occurring. A radon gas detector will alert you and your family should the levels of radon gas in your home become too highly concentrated.

Causes for High Radon Levels in Your Home

There are many reasons why radon levels may be dangerously high in your home or apartment building. One trend that may be the culprit for the increased prevalence of high radon levels is the energy efficiency trend. While energy efficiency is a great way to save money, many builders are attempting to make homes so airtight that dangerous levels of radon gas cannot escape into the outer atmosphere. Instead, this radon gas builds up in the home causing serious and severe side effects.

Radon Mitigation In Your Home

If a home or building is discovered to have radon gas levels that are too high for safe living, radon mitigation may be required. Radon mitigation is any process that strips the atmosphere of radon gas and makes it safe to live in once again. There are several different processes that can aid in radon mitigation. Something as simple as opening a window and turning on a fan can be enough to remove radon gas levels from the home. However, sometimes more complicated equipment such as air scrubbers and air filters are required to remove high concentrations of radon gas. Often, a period of quarantine is required after radon mitigation has occurred to ensure that radon gas levels do not rise again after the air has been purified. It is recommended to contact us and we can test your home for any signs of radon. This can help ensure you have the best indoor air quality possible.

Clean Air Can Improve the Comfort Level

To help improve the air quality in your home make sure to have the HVAC system inspected on a regular basis. There are several ways that you can improve the air quality and get clean air in your home. The best way is to make sure scheduled maintenances are done when needed. If you are unsure when these inspections should be done, make sure to contact us. We can advise you on the correct schedule based on your home. There are also air cleaners that you can invest in. When purchasing an air cleaner, there are a few things to consider. We can also advise you on the options you have so the air in your home is the best it can be. The air cleaners help improve the air quality for you to breath in. It is also important to allow fresh air to come into your home. Air cleaners not only help the air to be a better quality, but it can improve the efficiency for your heating system. This can help you to save money in the long run.

Keep the Air Clean in your Home

One of the easiest things to have cleaner air in your home is to use air cleaners. This can mean using such things as ultraviolet air cleaners throughout the year. You will also be able to use infrared heating throughout the winter. These air cleaning methods will help to make sure that the air is being rid of things like germs and bacteria, which could normally get you sick. You might also consider using ductless air conditioning to prevent any problems with bacteria building up in the air ducts, which can get you sick. If you notice you or your family gets sick often, the air quality in your home could be to blame.

Fresh Air is Beneficial

Besides good quality air, you also want to reduce the amount of stale air that could be in your home. You can get better air into your home through the use of air exchangers. The premise behind these is that they will change the temperature of the air coming into the home with the temperature of the air leaving the home. This will help for you to get the fresh air from outside, into your home without having to suffer the changes in temperature, which are normally associated with opening a window or any other method of getting new air into the home.

Know the Types of Heating Sources

Fireplaces are an option in order to keep the home heated during the winter. There is a slight downside because sometimes they can lead to fumes and other material in the air which you will breathe in. It is a good idea to do everything you can to eliminate this through cleaner sources of heat like ground source heat. You can also choose to use pumps as a way to get the heat you are looking for without having to install anything new into your home. To understand which option is best for your home, make sure to contact us so we can advise you for what is best.
